Nokia Uses AI to Optimize Network Energy Consumption
Nokia Oyj has introduced artificial intelligence-driven solutions designed to significantly reduce telecommunications network energy use. The technology aims to achieve zero energy consumption during periods of no network traffic.
Nokia Oyj has unveiled new artificial intelligence (AI) based solutions aimed at substantially reducing energy consumption in telecommunications networks. The company states that the technology enables zero energy usage during periods when the network experiences no traffic.
The core of these developments involves utilizing AI to dynamically optimize various network components, including 5G AirScale radios and mobile backhaul. A key feature, "extreme deep sleep" mode, allows radio units to enter an ultra-low power state during periods of low traffic, potentially cutting energy use by up to 95% compared to active mode.
Nokia's MantaRay Energy solution employs AI to manage multiple daily sleep modes at the cell level, enabling more precise energy savings without negatively impacting network performance. The AI predicts traffic patterns and automatically adjusts thresholds for activating and deactivating energy-saving features, contributing up to an additional 15% in energy savings across the network.
The company has also focused on enhancing energy efficiency in mobile backhaul networks through its Wavence microwave radios. Traffic-aware AI optimizes sleep modes within these radio units, leading to an average 25% reduction in energy consumption. Additionally, new integrated solutions that operate without air cooling further decrease energy usage at radio access network sites.
Nokia indicates that these AI and digital twin-based approaches can reduce the overall energy consumption of base stations and backhaul configurations by an additional 15%. This initiative supports the broader goal of achieving sustainable, zero-emission networks and reducing carbon emissions.
