Non-functional Crosswalk Buttons Offer Leadership Lessons

A significant number of pedestrian crosswalk buttons in urban areas are non-functional, a fact that can surprisingly offer valuable lessons in leadership. In many major cities and high-traffic zones, these buttons have been disabled due to budget constraints, with more sophisticated traffic management systems handling traffic flow more efficiently.

Despite their lack of practical effect, these "placebo buttons" continue to be used because they provide individuals with an outlet to express frustration or a desire for the traffic to proceed. While pressing the button doesn't actually hasten the light change, the action can offer psychological relief and a sense of agency.

Leaders can draw parallels from this human tendency. The act of pressing a button, even an ineffective one, fulfills a need for expression. Similar examples include "close door" buttons in elevators, which in the US are often inactive due to federal laws, yet are still frequently pushed by passengers.

This behavior highlights the importance for leaders to provide team members with a sense of involvement and control, even when not every decision rests with them. Leaders should focus on establishing clear communication channels and offering employees avenues for input, fostering greater engagement and satisfaction.
