NORD opens automated small parts warehouse
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has opened its largest automated small parts warehouse to date in Bargteheide, Germany. The facility expands logistics capacity and is expected to shorten delivery times.
Getriebebau NORD GmbH & Co. KG, operating as NORD DRIVESYSTEMS, has inaugurated a new automated small parts warehouse in Bargteheide, Germany. This facility represents the group's largest automated storage system to date and is designed to significantly enhance logistics capacity.
The warehouse spans 6,600 square meters across two halls and reaches 44 levels high, providing over 70,000 storage locations. The system, developed by Austrian company KNAPP AG, utilizes 44 shuttle vehicles capable of performing up to 900 putaway and retrieval operations per hour. These shuttles transport product carriers weighing up to 50 kg and measuring up to 60x40 cm.
Project completion occurred on schedule despite challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic and a minor flood, according to CEO Ullrich Küchenmeister. Planning involved staff from multiple NORD divisions, including logistics, IT, and facility management.
In addition to the automated small parts storage, the new halls accommodate a narrow-aisle warehouse with capacity for 4,400 pallets, as well as improved areas for goods receiving and dispatch. Material packaging operations have also been relocated to this new site. NORD anticipates that the expanded warehouse will enable faster deliveries to customers and subsidiaries, and reduce assembly times at the Bargteheide plant due to improved component availability.
