Nordea enables Dankort payments via Apple Pay

Nordea Bank Abp has expanded its mobile payment options for Danish customers. Effective immediately, 1.3 million of the bank's private customers can add the Dankort portion of their Visa/Dankort cards to Apple Pay. This means customers can use either the Visa or Dankort function when paying with their phone or smartwatch in stores.

How it works

Previously, Nordea customers could only use Apple Pay with the Visa portion of the card. With this update, customers can now choose whether to pay with the Visa or Dankort function, mirroring the choices available with their physical card. The aim is to provide a more seamless payment experience regardless of the device used.

Growth in Mobile Payments

The popularity of mobile and smartwatch payments is rising in Denmark. Between 2023 and 2024, the proportion of Danes using mobile payments increased from 21% to 31%. Concurrently, the use of physical Visa/Dankort cards decreased from 79% to 69% during the same period. Nordea notes that this change aligns with merchant requests for digital Dankort payment options.

Activation instructions

Customers need to update their digital cards in Apple Pay by removing and re-adding them to ensure both card functions are available. The bank confirmed the feature would be available before the peak Christmas shopping season.
