Nordea Finances Next Generation Energy Projects
Nordea Bank Abp has finalized a green financing bridge facility for European Energy's e-methanol plant in Kassø, Denmark. The long-term partnership supports complex renewable energy infrastructure.

Nordea Bank Abp has supported the development of significant renewable energy projects through an ongoing financial partnership with European Energy. This collaboration has spanned over 14 years, evolving from traditional banking services to encompass complex financing structures for large-scale initiatives.
The partnership has been instrumental in enabling projects like the Kassø facility in Denmark, which commenced operations in 2025. This plant is notable as the world's first commercial-scale e-methanol production site. It utilizes renewable electricity from an adjacent solar park to produce green fuel and chemicals.
Nordea acted as the lead structuring bank for a green financing bridge facility for the Kassø joint venture, alongside SMBC and with a partial guarantee from EIFO. This financing is intended to support ongoing operations and pave the way for long-term project financing.
The Kassø facility has an annual production capacity of up to 42,000 tonnes. Offtake agreements are in place with major companies, including A.P. Moller - Maersk, the LEGO Group, and Novo Nordisk, demonstrating the integration of renewable energy into established industrial value chains.
Projects of this nature require robust financing structures capable of managing extended construction timelines, operational risks, and liquidity. The sustained relationship between Nordea and European Energy highlights the crucial role of financial institutions in bringing new energy technologies to market.
