Nordea Launches New Green Financing Tool for Real Estate

Nordea Bank Abp, the largest financial services group in the Nordic region, has launched a new green securities financing loan for real estate companies. This offering provides real estate firms with a method to obtain short-term capital for financing green projects by utilizing their portfolio of securities as collateral.

The new financing mechanism integrates previously used securities-based lending with environmental responsibility goals. Companies possessing portfolios of liquid assets, such as stocks and bonds, can now leverage these as collateral to secure funding specifically designated as green. Nordea positions itself as one of the initial banks combining securities financing with green finance initiatives.

Peter Dalmalm, Head of Nordea Business Banking Sweden, emphasizes the offering's significance in supporting clients' sustainability journeys. "Green financing options are present in most customer dialogues today. Sustainability is truly on everyone's agenda," Dalmalm states. He adds that the new service helps advance the transition of both Nordea and its clients towards a more sustainable future.

The real estate sector has long been a frontrunner in sustainable finance, with environmental and energy performance certificates for buildings providing real estate companies a convenient way to define green investments. Patrik Svensson, Head of Nordea Business Banking Region West and Business Banking Real Estate Sweden, confirms that the sector's building practices are already largely environmentally sustainable, making it a natural fit for green financing structures.

Sina Kazemi from Nordea's Securities Finance Sales team in Sweden describes green securities financing as a flexible and accessible option that complements other green financial products, such as green bonds. It offers a solution for companies that may not possess the administrative resources to issue a green bond. Nordea aims for carbon neutrality by 2050 and actively supports its clients' transition through financing.
