Nordea outlines impact of DDoS attacks on digital banking services
Nordea has issued guidance explaining how Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks function and their potential effect on online banking access.

Financial institutions are increasingly targeted by Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, which aim to disrupt online services by overwhelming systems with malicious traffic. Nordea clarified that while such incidents can lead to temporary latency or accessibility issues in its mobile and web banking channels, they do not involve data breaches or the compromise of personal information.
Unlike cyberattacks designed for financial theft, DDoS attacks are primarily intended to cause disruption and uncertainty. These incidents are often politically motivated or carried out by groups seeking visibility. Nordea noted that its defensive systems typically mitigate these attempts automatically, though sophisticated attacks may still occasionally result in service fluctuations for users.
The bank emphasized that it continuously collaborates with national cybersecurity agencies and law enforcement to bolster defense mechanisms. Customers experiencing service disruptions during an attack are advised to wait briefly and attempt to access the service again, as the bank maintains that all financial data remains secure throughout these events.
