Nordea research: Finnish Christmas spending budgets decline slightly

According to new research from Nordea, the average Christmas budget for Finns is 525 euros this year. This includes 316 euros for gifts and 209 euros for other festive expenses. The figure represents a slight decrease compared to previous years, reflecting a continued trend of consumer caution in the current economic environment.

The study suggests that the core of the holiday season has moved toward intangible values. Approximately 78 percent of respondents identified spending time with family and loved ones as the most important element of their ideal Christmas, while the volume of physical gifts ranked low on their list of priorities.

Development Director Tanja Eronen noted that while Christmas budgets have tightened, there are modest signs of recovery in broader consumer spending. The data also reveals a shift in gift-giving habits, as interest in purchasing pre-owned items as gifts has grown, particularly among younger demographics.

Conducted by Kantar Finland in November 2025, the survey gathered responses from 1,077 participants. The results highlight regional and demographic differences in holiday preferences; for instance, traditional food remains more significant in rural areas, while the Christmas sauna remains a stronger priority for male respondents than for women.
