Nordic collaboration to advance hospital care at home

Gothenburg, Sweden – Chalmers University of Technology is spearheading a new Nordic initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration for hospital-level care delivered in patients' homes. The project includes Sahlgrenska University Hospital, Karolinska University Hospital, Skåne University Hospital, and Oslo University Hospital, along with Region Jämtland Härjedalen, in partnership with medtech companies and patient organizations.

A growing number of patients are receiving advanced care in their own homes, a development that enhances accessibility and patient satisfaction while easing the burden on hospitals. However, for home-based hospital care to be effective, new collaborative methods, robust technical solutions, and tailored guidelines are essential.

"By bringing together healthcare providers, academia, medtech companies, and patients, we aim to foster a shared understanding of what is needed for hospital care at home to function effectively," stated Andreas Hellström, project leader and senior lecturer at Chalmers' Department of Technology Management and Economics.

The initiative builds upon experiences from a previous Medtech4Health project funded by Vinnova, where Sahlgrenska University Hospital played a key role. The new project aims to facilitate national and Nordic implementation, focusing on frameworks, organization, and the patient perspective.
