Nordic Semiconductor Technology Marks 10 Years in BBC micro:bit

Norwegian firm Nordic Semiconductor is marking ten years of its low-power wireless technology powering the BBC micro:bit, an educational development board aimed at teaching coding and digital creativity. The Micro:bit Educational Foundation reports that the platform has reached an estimated 73.5 million young people in over 85 countries.

Launched in 2016, the initial project distributed one million micro:bit boards to UK schoolchildren. It has since become a widespread tool for introducing programming fundamentals. The Foundation aims to reach 100 million young people by 2028.

Gareth Stockdale, CEO of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation, highlighted Nordic Semiconductor's early commitment and supply of components for the original device. The current micro:bit v2 utilizes Nordic's nRF52833 System-on-Chip, offering Bluetooth LE connectivity and edge AI capabilities.

Nordic Semiconductor CEO Vegard Wollan stated that the micro:bit demonstrates the impact of accessible and engaging technology. The company continues its support for fostering technology careers among youth, participating in local tech events to connect with students and demonstrate its wireless IoT solutions.
