Private investors drove trading activity to a new record on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in May 2009, according to online broker Nordnet. An average of 14,270 trades were executed per trading day, surpassing the previous record set in October 2008. This represents an 88% increase compared to May 2008 and a 28% rise from April 2009.
Nordnet described May as one of its best trading months historically, achieving record market share and customer inflow. The company indicated that optimism has returned among private investors, with increased risk appetite correlating with recent stock price gains. Trading in small-cap stocks and leveraged stock investments saw a significant rise.
Vestas remained the most traded stock in May with 72,966 transactions. The top five most popular stocks among private investors included FLSmidth & Co., Carlsberg B, Danske Bank, and Investea Stockholm Retail. Nordnet clients were net buyers of shares totaling DKK 103 million, with Vestas and FLSmidth & Co. seeing the largest net purchases.
Max Gandrup, Country General Manager for Nordnet Denmark, noted that private investors took advantage of a stock price dip in the final week of May to execute their largest single-week net purchase of shares ever recorded by Nordnet. This suggests growing market confidence following profit-taking in April.
