Norfolk Southern Corporation reported its second quarter 2026 financial results on Thursday, highlighting record quarterly revenues. The company's income from railway operations and earnings per share saw significant improvement when adjusted to exclude merger-related expenses, restructuring charges, and the effects of the Eastern Ohio incident.
For the quarter, railway operating revenues reached $3.5 billion, an 11% increase year-over-year, driven by a 4% volume increase and higher fuel surcharges. Reported diluted earnings per share were $3.26. However, after adjusting for significant expenses including those related to the Eastern Ohio incident and restructuring, income from railway operations was $1.2 billion and adjusted diluted earnings per share were $3.52.
President and Chief Executive Officer Mark George stated that the company exceeded expectations due to improved demand in key markets and the team's focus on safety and operational adaptability. He affirmed that priorities for the second half of the year include safe and reliable operations, high-quality customer service, and disciplined execution to capitalize on emerging opportunities.
The company expressed optimism regarding demand trends, positioning itself to create value for stakeholders. However, Norfolk Southern also acknowledged the potential impact of known and unknown risks, including economic conditions and the successful execution of its strategic initiatives.
