Norisbank: Digital financial services become standard, predicts 2026 usage trends

Digital financial services, including banking apps and mobile payments, have become an everyday staple for many Germans. In 2025, over half (51.3%) of the population utilized these services, with 28% reporting increased usage compared to the previous year. A minority of 14.4% continued to manage their finances without these digital tools.

Younger demographics, particularly those aged 18-39, are leading the adoption of digital banking. They reported significantly or slightly higher usage in 2025. This trend showed a noticeable decrease in intensity among individuals aged 40 and above.

Looking ahead to 2026, the majority of Germans plan to maintain their current digital banking habits, with 62.4% expecting to use services at the same frequency. Over 10% intend to increase their engagement with digital financial tools. Younger users continue to be the primary drivers of this growth, while older demographics show a preference for maintaining their existing patterns.

Users expect digital banking solutions to be fast, secure, and transparent. Real-time updates and ease of use are key priorities. While younger users favor modern features and intuitive design, older individuals place a higher emphasis on security and clear overviews. A common expectation across all age groups is for these apps to be practical for daily use.
