Norisbank Survey: Travel Costs Exceeding Budgets for Many Germans

Bonn, Germany – An increasing number of Germans are finding holiday travel financially out of reach in 2026, as indicated by a recent survey conducted by norisbank. The research reveals that while the desire for travel persists, economic limitations are preventing many from taking trips.

The survey found that 64 percent of Germans still plan a longer holiday of at least seven days. However, among those who are not traveling, one-third cited a lack of funds as the primary reason. This financial strain is not stemming from competing large expenditures like car or house purchases, but rather a general inclination to save money.

Significant disparities in travel planning exist across different demographics. While 71.3 percent of employed individuals plan a longer holiday, only 47.8 percent of non-employed individuals (pensioners, students, unemployed) are doing so. Age also plays a role, with approximately 70 percent of those aged 18-49 planning a longer trip, compared to 59 percent of those aged 50-69.

Furthermore, 28.8 percent of respondents reported having less money available for holidays this year than the previous one, a notable increase from 2019 when only 13.1 percent stated this. The inability to travel is often the most visible sign of broader financial pressures, prompting individuals to postpone expenses and conserve funds. The survey highlights a trend of tightening budgets impacting discretionary spending like holidays.
