North American Startup Funding Hit Record Highs in First Half of 2026
North American venture investment reached all-time highs in the first half of 2026. Large, late-stage funding rounds for AI industry leaders significantly drove these investments.

North American venture investment hit record highs in the first half of 2026, primarily driven by substantial late-stage funding rounds for artificial intelligence companies, according to Crunchbase data. This trend continues the surge observed in the first quarter.
Total investment for North American startups reached an unprecedented $392 billion in the first six months of the year. Specifically, the second quarter saw investments totaling $137.2 billion, marking the second-highest quarterly figure on record. Capital concentration was evident, with significant investments flowing into a limited number of large deals rather than a broad increase in transaction volume.
Late-stage companies attracted the bulk of the funding, with approximately $101 billion invested in the second quarter. AI company Anthropic led the pack, securing $65 billion in a single funding round. Defense technology firm Anduril Industries also raised a significant $5 billion.
Early-stage funding saw a notable increase, reaching over $31 billion in the second quarter, a nearly 15% rise from the previous quarter. The AI-focused startup Prometheus was a major contributor, raising $12 billion. Seed and angel investments, however, experienced a slight decline.
The AI sector continued its dominance, attracting around 80% of all venture funding during the quarter. The period also witnessed major exit events, including SpaceX's record-breaking initial public offering.
