North Atlantic Salmon Fund (UK) Awards Conservation Prizes
North Atlantic Salmon Fund (UK) has announced the inaugural winners of 'The Orri' awards: Ribble Rivers Trust and River Cree Hatchery & Habitat Trust. The prizes support community-led projects aimed at restoring Atlantic salmon populations in UK rivers.

The North Atlantic Salmon Fund (UK) has awarded its first 'The Orri' prizes to Ribble Rivers Trust and River Cree Hatchery & Habitat Trust. Named in honour of NASF founder Orri Vigfússon, the awards aim to bolster local conservation efforts focused on restoring UK rivers for Atlantic salmon.
Wild Atlantic salmon populations in the UK are designated as endangered, having declined by 70% over the past four decades. NASF (UK) established 'The Orri' to support community-driven initiatives that rebuild river habitats and reconnect local communities with the species.
Ribble Rivers Trust will use its award for the 'Hodder Together' initiative, engaging schoolchildren in citizen science, employing apprentices for restoration work, and collaborating with anglers on monitoring efforts. CEO Jack Spees stated the funding will also contribute to mitigating flood risks.
Scotland-based River Cree Hatchery & Habitat Trust plans to expand its hatchery operations and enhance public engagement. Project coordinator Murdo Crosbie highlighted the aim to improve fry survival and support training programs. The initiative is expected to aid the recovery of salmon in the River Cree.
Both winning projects are scheduled to commence work in late spring 2026. They will undertake crowdfunding campaigns in February and March to secure matching funds. 'The Orri' provides £10,000 in direct funding plus media and strategic assistance from NASF (UK).
