North Rhine Chamber of Pharmacists Issues Guidelines on Antibiotic Use
The Apothekerkammer Nordrhein has released guidelines for the proper use of antibiotics to combat misuse and ensure treatment efficacy.

The Apothekerkammer Nordrhein (AKNR), representing pharmacists in the North Rhine region, has issued comprehensive guidelines on the appropriate use of antibiotics. These directives aim to address growing concerns over antibiotic resistance and ensure patients understand the significance of correct antibiotic intake, both during and after treatment.
The core of the guidance focuses on educating patients about proper dosage, duration of treatment, and handling residual medication. The AKNR emphasizes that antibiotics should only be used as prescribed by a doctor and exclusively for bacterial infections, as they are ineffective against viruses.
Furthermore, the guidelines remind patients to strictly adhere to prescribed dosages and to complete the course of treatment as directed, even if symptoms improve, without prior medical consultation. If a full course is not required as per the prescription, any remaining medication should be disposed of correctly at a pharmacy.
Through these recommendations, the AKNR seeks to promote responsible antibiotic consumption and slow the development of bacterial resistance, which is crucial for public health to ensure antibiotics remain effective tools for treating severe bacterial infections in the future.
