North Rhine-Westphalia Abolishes Fees for Pharmaceutical Assistant Training

The German Pharmacists' Association (ABDA) has welcomed the decision by the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia to abolish tuition fees for the training of pharmaceutical technical assistants (PTAs). This reform aims to rectify a disparity where many other vocational training programs have long been state-funded, while PTA education has often required parents to pay significant fees.

According to ABDA, the decision will ease the financial strain on families and make the profession more appealing. The association expressed hope that other German states will soon adopt a similar approach, aligning with the comprehensive plan for health professions agreed upon in March 2020.

Leaders from the four pharmacy organizations in North Rhine-Westphalia also voiced their support for the fee abolition. They view the decision as a crucial signal to strengthen local pharmacies and attract young individuals to a career that previously involved substantial personal costs.

The state had already been covering 70 percent of tuition costs since September 2018. The complete removal of fees is seen as a further step to bolster the pharmacy sector. The organizations anticipate further constructive dialogue with the ministry regarding potential additional costs and the future development of the training system.
