NPCI unable to attribute 10.65 billion UPI transactions to specific states in September

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recorded 10.65 billion UPI transactions as 'unclassified' in September 2026. This segment accounted for 44 percent of the 24.07 billion total national transactions, a sharp increase from the 13 percent share observed in April 2023.

Among classified regions, Maharashtra led with 2.36 billion transactions, followed by Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, which each processed approximately 1.25 billion transactions. The financial value of the unclassified segment reached 11.48 trillion rupees, significantly outweighing the 273.88 billion rupees recorded in Maharashtra, the highest-performing classified state.

The unclassified category represents transactions that the NPCI cannot assign to a specific location. The persistence of this high volume suggests ongoing challenges in data granularity for India's digital payment infrastructure, as these transactions remain excluded from regional performance metrics.
