Comment sections for NPR podcasts on Spotify have emerged as an unexpected online community for middle schoolers seeking to avoid traditional social media platforms. The phenomenon came to light when the production team behind NPR's "Wild Card" podcast noticed a flood of unusual comments under the show's Spotify episodes.

Initially, NPR staff suspected the comments, featuring strange abbreviations and indecipherable emojis, were from bots and reported them to Spotify. However, a younger producer, Hannah Chin, immediately recognized the messages as likely originating from middle schoolers.

The young individuals were using the comment sections of NPR podcasts as a form of secret group chat, as these platforms offered a less monitored space compared to popular social media services. This was not the first instance; similar behavior had been observed previously on the "TED Radio Hour" podcast.

When asked by a reporter covering the story why they chose NPR, one young commenter gave a straightforward answer: "I think we just, like, looked for podcasts that didn't have many comments." Ira Glass, the long-time host of NPR, commented humorously that such a response was a bit hurtful for a public service broadcaster.
