NRF Europe Outlines AI Strategy for Retail Sector
NRF Retail's Big Show Europe in Paris highlighted artificial intelligence (AI) as central to the future of retail. The event showcased strategies for retailers to effectively leverage AI.

NRF Retail's Big Show Europe, held in Paris with over 12,000 retail leaders, placed artificial intelligence (AI) at the forefront of industry transformation. AI was identified as one of the five key themes for the sector's evolution.
The event concluded that no single market holds a monopoly on the retail AI playbook. Instead, different regions have demonstrated unique strengths and chapters of AI application. The most successful approach, it was suggested, will involve assembling a composite strategy from these global lessons. Retailers who achieve this integration before the critical 2026 holiday season are expected to see tangible sales improvements.
A universal challenge identified across the industry is "enterprise debt" – a combination of inconsistent data, undocumented processes, aging systems, and unprepared talent. Research by Genpact and HFS Research indicated that 85 percent of business leaders believe this debt caps the value they derive from AI. The retail and consumer goods sectors were found to carry the highest process debt, with an estimated $1.1 trillion in trapped value.
European retailers have shown particular prowess in process optimization and speed. Zara's internal models, for example, identify trends significantly faster than traditional methods, impacting production and inventory allocation. Zalando attributes a substantial portion of its recent revenue growth to AI-driven personalization while simultaneously reducing its return rate.
In the United States, retailers have focused on customer-facing applications. Tapestry's Kate Spade launched an AI-powered gift concierge service. Salesforce data suggests that brands utilizing AI shopper agents experienced 59 percent higher sales growth during the holiday season.
