NRMP Releases Reports to Enhance Transparency in Residency Transition

Washington D.C. – The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) has published three new reports offering analyses of key factors impacting the transition to residency. These reports provide first-of-their-kind examinations of recruitment, matching, and pathways within graduate medical education.

The studies utilize data from several match cycles, investigating the impact of program signaling, match outcomes, program ranking behaviors, and residency placement paths. Particular attention is given to applicants who initially go unmatched.

"NRMP has a unique opportunity and commitment to leverage match data to address the issues that matter most to our constituents and stakeholders," said NRMP President and CEO Donna L. Lamb. "By bringing forward new data and perspectives from the match, we can illuminate trends and experiences that have been difficult to understand, providing stakeholders with evidence that supports more informed decisions."

One report examines how program signaling relates to ranking and match outcomes across specialties. Another analyzes characteristics of applicants included on program rank lists, and a third tracks the residency placement outcomes for matched and unmatched applicants. The NRMP plans to continue releasing data to foster understanding of emerging issues and provide actionable insights.
