NTT Docomo reports nationwide 5G SA service outage
Japanese carrier NTT Docomo experienced a widespread 5G standalone network failure on Tuesday. The operator has advised customers to switch devices to 4G to restore connectivity.
Japanese telecommunications operator NTT Docomo reported a nationwide disruption to its 5G Standalone (SA) services on Tuesday, November 5. The outage, which began at approximately 11:18 a.m. local time, impacted voice calls, data transmission, and SMS services across the country.
In an official update, the company advised users to adjust their device settings to prioritize 4G network mode until the issue is resolved. The carrier noted that standard 5G and 4G services remain unaffected, as do subscribers using mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that leverage Docomo’s infrastructure. Preliminary internal investigations have shown no evidence of unauthorized access or cyberattacks relating to the network outage.
The outage coincides with ongoing maintenance on NTT Docomo’s online store and My docomo portal. The company recently confirmed a separate security incident involving unauthorized access that resulted in the exposure of customer personal information, including names and contact details. Both portals remain offline as the company conducts investigations.
