Number of Millionaire Households Renting Increases Sharply
A report from RentCafe indicates that the population of millionaire renters in the U.S. grew by 229% between 2020 and 2024, outpacing growth among homeowners.

Between 2020 and 2024, the number of millionaire households opting to rent their residences rose by 229%, a growth rate that exceeds the 193% increase observed among millionaire homeowners. According to RentCafe’s analysis of American Community Survey data, this shift indicates that a growing segment of wealthy individuals is prioritizing lifestyle flexibility over traditional property ownership.
The report defines millionaire households as those with an annual income of $1 million or more. Financial analysts note that for this demographic, renting is often a strategic choice rather than a necessity, allowing individuals to maintain liquidity and avoid the capital allocation constraints associated with residential real estate markets.
Demographic data within the report highlights that 75% of these millionaire renter households are dual-income couples. This shift challenges traditional housing market norms, where high-net-worth status has historically been synonymous with real estate ownership.
