Nvidia and Cisco launch new 400 Gbps/lane pluggable optical module standard
Nvidia and Cisco have jointly introduced the USFP (Universal Small Form Factor Pluggable) standard for pluggable optical modules, enabling 400 Gbps per lane data transfer speeds. The new standard aims to increase data center capacity and efficiency.
Nvidia and Cisco announced a collaboration to launch the USFP (Universal Small Form Factor Pluggable) standard, the industry's first pluggable optical module specification supporting 400 Gbps per lane.
The new USFP standard is designed to significantly boost data transfer capabilities within data centers. Initial products will feature 16 full-duplex channels, enabling a total throughput of up to 12.8 terabits per second, which is four times the capacity of current 200 Gbps per lane modules.
The standard incorporates a novel two-dimensional array connector with a two-step insertion design. This design minimizes contact wear and enhances signal integrity by engaging high-speed contacts only after the module is fully inserted. Additionally, USFP supports a 100W power consumption, simplifying switch hardware design.
Nvidia and Cisco state that the USFP standard offers 1.3 times greater energy efficiency compared to existing solutions utilizing 400G SerDes technology. This advancement is expected to be crucial for data centers focused on improving performance and reducing energy usage.
