Nvidia CEO: Forgetting Math Due to AI is Not a Problem

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has stated that forgetting basic mathematics due to the use of artificial intelligence (AI) is not a problem. In an interview with The New York Times, Huang noted that while AI may help students complete assignments faster, it could lead to the erosion of fundamental knowledge.

However, he expressed no anxiety over this development. Huang drew a parallel to modern children, suggesting that few can perform long division or recall multiplication tables. He personally admitted to forgetting his own home address and phone number, but found this state acceptable.

Huang believes that AI might diminish certain fine-grained cognitive flexibilities, but simultaneously could foster better "systems thinkers." He described AI as an "ability amplifier," enabling individuals to deepen their learning and focus on uniquely human capabilities like narrative, aesthetics, and empathy.

The Nvidia CEO's perspective highlights his belief in AI's potential to reshape human learning and work. Rather than prioritizing the retention of basic skills, he proposes that people should embrace AI as a tool that facilitates higher-order thinking and creativity.
