Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang: AI Distillation is "Competition," Not "Theft"

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has characterized the practice of AI model distillation as "competition," directly countering claims by U.S. officials who have described it as "theft." Distillation involves training AI models on the outputs generated by other models, a technique that has become a focal point in U.S.-China technological disputes.

The U.S. government has accused Chinese AI companies of employing distillation to extract capabilities from U.S.-developed AI systems, violating terms of service. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously called the practice "theft" and suggested potential sanctions against overseas firms utilizing it.

In a CNBC interview, Huang responded to the "theft" accusation by stating, "That's called competition." He elaborated that testing or learning from a competitor's products is permissible within a competitive landscape. While acknowledging he would prefer others not learn from Nvidia's work, he asserted that competition ultimately drives improvement.

U.S. agencies, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), have pointed to "industrial-scale knowledge distillation campaigns" by Chinese firms. AI companies like Anthropic have also reported instances of what they deem "illicit distillation" by Chinese entities, further escalating tensions over AI development and intellectual property.
