Chipmaker Nvidia has released new details about its Vera central processing unit (CPU) designed for artificial intelligence servers. This move pits Nvidia against established competitors AMD and Intel in the AI hardware market.
The Vera CPUs were delivered in June to key clients including OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX. Nvidia, which has become dominant in AI through its graphics processing units (GPUs), is now aiming to offer more integrated system solutions.
Nvidia's strategy involves vertically integrating more components within its systems, with the goal of selling complete computing solutions in full racks rather than just individual chips. The company states this approach enhances performance and maintains its systems as the preferred choice for leading AI research labs.
Historically, the CPU was the most crucial and costly server component. While GPUs have taken center stage with the rise of AI, agent-based AI applications are now refocusing attention on CPUs for managing autonomous AI agents. This market shift has also seen significant stock performance increases for AMD and Intel in 2026.
