NYC AI sector prioritizes applied technology over infrastructure

A report from CB Insights, produced with Accenture and Tech:NYC, maps the growth of New York’s AI ecosystem, which now comprises over 2,000 venture-backed companies. Unlike San Francisco, where capital concentration is heavily skewed toward foundational infrastructure and robotics, New York’s AI sector focuses on applying intelligence to existing, highly regulated industries such as asset management, insurance, and medical systems.

New York’s AI cluster employs roughly 187,000 people and has become a distinct hub for professional services. The report highlights that finance, accounting, and related analytics make up the largest clusters of applied AI. These sectors are also the most successful in creating unicorn-scale companies, with the asset management field producing such firms at double the rate of the broader ecosystem.

However, the analysis indicates a disconnect between funding and operational momentum. Approximately one-quarter of companies reduced their headcount over the past year, regardless of the amount of capital raised. This suggests that large funding rounds no longer serve as a reliable indicator of organizational stability or growth, prompting a shift in how investors and analysts evaluate the sustainability of startups in the current market.
