The Obesity Action Coalition (OAC) has formally urged Cigna to reconsider its decision to discontinue coverage for GLP-1 medications for weight management. This policy change, effective July 1, affects more than 50,000 Cigna employees across the United States.

The move has generated substantial opposition from within the company, with nearly 600 employees signing a petition requesting the restoration of coverage. Cigna has stated it will uphold the decision, citing research and input from clinical leaders, while also pointing to other available weight management resources.

Joe Nadglowski, President and CEO of OAC, emphasized the importance of Cigna listening to its workforce. He noted in a statement to Bloomberg Businessweek that these medications are critical for individuals managing chronic conditions. Some employees have reportedly faced substantial out-of-pocket costs, with monthly expenses increasing from $25 to approximately $300.

OAC asserts that obesity is a chronic disease requiring comprehensive, science-based treatment. As a healthcare company, Cigna should recognize the need for medically appropriate treatments, not solely rely on health coaching and lifestyle support. The coalition calls for Cigna to reinstate GLP-1 medication coverage to ensure access to evidence-based care for its employees.
