ODVA Specifies ix Industrial® Connector for Ethernet/IP Networks
ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) has officially adopted the compact ix Industrial® connector for Ethernet/IP applications. This standardizes a smaller, more robust alternative to the traditional RJ45 connector for industrial networking.
ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association) has officially specified the ix Industrial® connector for use in Ethernet/IP networks. This standardization offers a smaller and more robust alternative to the traditional RJ45 connector in industrial automation.
The ix Industrial® is designed to meet the evolving needs of industry for miniaturized components without compromising performance or reliability. The connector is already integrated into other major industry standards, including PROFINET, CC-Link IE TSN, FL-net, and GigE Vision. Its international standardization (IEC 61076-3-124) ensures market competition and supply security, as it is offered by three independent manufacturers: Hirose, HARTING, and Amphenol.
The conventional RJ45 connector has proven too large and mechanically vulnerable for modern, compact industrial devices. Ix Industrial® addresses this by offering a 75% smaller volume and a 10 mm mating pitch, enabling higher port density. The connector is built for harsh industrial conditions, withstanding up to 5,000 mating cycles and operating temperatures from -40°C to +85°C. Furthermore, it supports data rates up to 10 Gbit/s and IEEE802.3bt PoE++ power delivery.
HARTING provides a comprehensive range of ix Industrial® products, including various housing and connection options, as well as IP65/67-protected versions. Field-assemblable cables and transition cables to RJ45 connectors are also available. Several leading automation companies, such as Siemens, Beckhoff, and B&R, have already integrated the ix Industrial® connector into their products.
