Ofcom investigates TikTok child safety measures

The UK's media regulator, Ofcom, has initiated a formal investigation into the video-sharing app TikTok regarding its child safety measures. This probe follows a government announcement last month that individuals under 16 would be banned from a range of platforms.

Ofcom will examine how TikTok verifies user ages and the effectiveness of its systems in preventing children from accessing potentially harmful content. The regulator had previously criticized the platform in May for not being sufficiently safe for children online.

"This is where TikTok comes in. We found that some methods of age checks being used by social media are not working well enough," stated Kate Davies, Ofcom's group director for strategy and research, in an interview with BBC's Today programme.

The findings of this investigation are anticipated and could lead to changes in TikTok's operational policies within the UK, particularly concerning the safeguarding of minors.
