Ofcom takes no further legal action against suicide forum
The UK's communications regulator, Ofcom, has stated it will not pursue further legal action against a pro-suicide forum. The regulator cited that the forum has blocked access for the majority of UK users and that no further legal routes are available under the Online Safety Act.
Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, has announced it will not take further legal action against a pro-suicide online forum linked to over 130 deaths in the UK. The decision comes after the forum implemented a geo-block preventing access for most UK users.
The regulator stated that under the provisions of the Online Safety Act, it has exhausted its available legal options. While acknowledging that users can still access the site via VPNs, Ofcom confirmed that the geo-block remains active. Suzanne Cater, Ofcom's enforcement director, asserted that the regulator had utilized its powers to their fullest extent.
Campaigners and suicide prevention charities have expressed strong disappointment. Andy Burrows, CEO of the Molly Rose Foundation, described the decision as lacking "moral courage" and predicted it would result in "more lost lives." Sarah Ruane, policy director at Samaritans, questioned the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act.
Ofcom previously investigated the forum, the first service to be scrutinized under the new online safety laws. In May, Ofcom issued a £950,000 fine to the site for non-compliance with the Online Safety Act. The forum has not paid the fine. Ofcom is reportedly exploring avenues to strengthen its enforcement powers with the government, particularly concerning court orders to compel internet service providers to block websites.
