Oil Company Profits Soar Amid Extreme Heatwaves, Analysis Finds

Six of the world's largest oil companies—BP, Chevron, Eni, ExxonMobil, Shell, and TotalEnergies—are set to see significant profit increases in the first half of 2026. An analysis by Oxfam indicates their combined net income reached $23 billion in Q1, with projections for Q2 nearing $45 billion.

Concurrently, the planet is experiencing severe heatwaves, which researchers link directly to emissions from these fossil fuel companies. Oxfam's report highlights that historical emissions from five of these firms have been linked to a quarter of all heatwaves recorded between 2000 and 2023.

The analysis underscores the disproportionate responsibility of oil and gas companies for climate change. In 2025 alone, these companies were estimated to have caused $60 billion in environmental damage. Despite the growing impacts of climate change, these firms plan to increase fossil fuel production by 14% by 2030.

The findings are prompting discussions on how to address climate change damages. Oxfam proposes taxing oil company profits to fund climate adaptation efforts, particularly in the Global South. The proposed tax structure could generate up to $400 billion annually.
