The app digitizes a popular improv game where two or more participants say a word simultaneously and then try to find a common word that best represents the sum of those two words. The process continues until everyone says the same word.
The game is now available on both iOS and Android. Ross initially built a version of the app in 2013, which achieved over one million downloads in its first week. Despite its initial success, the app was eventually shelved as Ok Go focused on other projects, but fan demand for its return has remained consistent.
Ross cited the success of popular word games like The New York Times' Wordle as inspiration for reviving "Say the Same Thing." He realized they had a well-liked game that could be brought back to a wider audience.
Key new features in the relaunched app include a daily challenge, a leaderboard for tracking top players, and a streak function to encourage daily engagement. Additionally, a mode for more than two players has been added, facilitating group play with friends and family. Ross views the game as a lighthearted way to share inside jokes, connect with new people, and provide a mental break.
