Old Spanish Finca Restored into Retreat

Malcolm Brooks has documented the extensive restoration of an old Spanish finca, located in the Catalan countryside, in his new book "Beyond the Meander." The property, initially sought as a modest dwelling, was discovered to be an aging farmhouse without mains electricity or a reliable water supply, presenting significant renovation challenges.

Undeterred, Brooks and his partner, Lyndsay, embarked on transforming the remote structure, surrounded by olive groves, into a retreat. The vision was to create a welcoming destination for visitors wishing to experience Catalonia and for anglers drawn to the Ebro River. The project involved installing solar power, designing electrical systems, and establishing water infrastructure.

The restoration process was marked by unforeseen difficulties, including accidental plastering over essential electrical wiring and enduring harsh winter weather. Despite these setbacks, the couple navigated the complexities of renovation and Spanish bureaucracy.
