Oman to Implement 12-Digit Unified Tariff from January 1, 2025

Oman Customs will implement a new version of the GCC Unified Tariff on January 1, 2025, expanding the Harmonized System (HS) code structure from eight to 12 digits for all products. This change aims to improve the accuracy of import and export statistical data and enhance the efficiency of customs procedures.

The first eight digits of the HS codes, along with their associated customs duty rates, will remain unchanged to minimize disruption for businesses. The expansion to 12 digits will allow for more specific product categorization, with additional subcodes providing greater granularity. A new Chapter 99 has also been introduced to specifically list hazardous items, aiding in their proper identification and handling.

Businesses involved in import and export activities in Oman are advised to review their current HS codes and update them according to the new 12-digit classification. This includes communicating any changes to customs brokers to ensure smooth processing of shipments after the effective date. The updated tariff is expected to streamline trade processes and improve data management within the region.
