One in Four Businesses Invisible to AI Recommendations, Report Finds

Strategic communications firm Lucie Content has released its inaugural "2026 AI Visibility Index," revealing that 26.6% of businesses are failing to appear in AI chatbot recommendations. The report suggests that traditional search engine optimization is no longer a guarantee of visibility in the age of artificial intelligence.

The study highlights the growing importance of AI as a source for business recommendations, with 45% of consumers now turning to AI for such advice, a significant increase from previous years. The research found a mere 45% correlation between strong performance in traditional search engine results and AI recommendations, indicating a disconnect for many businesses.

Lucie Content has also launched a free tool alongside the report, allowing companies to assess their AI visibility across platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini. The findings indicate a binary outcome for AI visibility: 84% of companies scored either zero or 100 on retrieval, meaning they either consistently appeared or not at all.

To improve AI visibility, businesses should focus on providing clear, consistent, and factually supported information. The report also emphasizes the role of strong video and imagery in helping both humans and AI understand and verify a business. Lucie Content reported that applying these improvements to their own operations led to measurable gains in their visibility.
