oneworld Alliance airlines launch investment fund for sustainable aviation fuel
The oneworld alliance and its member airlines have partnered with Breakthrough Energy Ventures to launch a new fund aimed at developing and commercializing Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).

Dallas/Fort Worth, TX โ September 17, 2025 โ The oneworld alliance and its member airlines announced today the launch of a new investment fund in partnership with Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV). The fund aims to address the limited availability and high cost of current Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF).
The fund is led by cornerstone investors Alaska Airlines and American Airlines, with IAG, Cathay Pacific, and Japan Airlines from the oneworld alliance, as well as Singapore Airlines, participating. The initial fund close is $150 million.
"By investing in the SAF technologies of the future, American and our oneworld partners are making this business decision to unlock novel technologies with the potential to reach larger scale at lower prices than current technologies can achieve," said Robert Isom, chief executive officer of American Airlines and chairman of oneworld.
The fund will invest in next-generation SAF technologies and support the growth of alternative fuel markets, aiming to create economic value for investors and drive technological innovation globally.
Breakthrough Energy Ventures, founded by Bill Gates, will serve as the fund's investment manager, bringing technical expertise and experience in supporting climate technology companies.
