Online Casinos Surpass Lotteries in Danish Gaming Revenue
Denmark's gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, reported that online casinos generated the most revenue in 2025, overtaking traditional lotteries for the first time since the market liberalization.
Denmark's gambling regulator, Spillemyndigheden, has released its 2025 financial breakdown, confirming that online casinos have officially become the nation's largest gambling segment, surpassing lotteries. The regulator's report indicates the Danish regulated gambling market generated a total of DKK 11.5 billion in gross gaming revenue.
Online casinos saw their revenue grow to a record DKK 4.3 billion, capturing a 38% market share. Lotteries experienced a decline, with their share falling to DKK 3.5 billion, accounting for 30.4% of the market. This shift reflects a long-term digital migration that has reshaped the Danish gaming landscape since the introduction of open licenses in 2012.
Land-based gaming venues experienced a contraction, with slot machine arcades generating DKK 1.18 billion and traditional brick-and-mortar casinos falling to DKK 378 million. The revenue for land-based casinos represents a 35% decrease compared to 2012 levels.
Concurrently, player protection systems have seen increased engagement. By the end of 2025, over 68,000 individuals had registered with ROFUS, Denmark's central self-exclusion system. The StopSpillet helpline also reported its busiest year on record.
