Opella makes Cialis available without prescription in Japan
Opella has received approval to sell Cialis® over-the-counter in Japan, expanding access to erectile dysfunction treatment for millions of men.

PARIS – Opella has announced a significant milestone in its global strategy to increase access to erectile dysfunction (ED) treatments. Japan has approved Cialis® for over-the-counter (OTC) sales, marking a key advancement for the company and patients in the country.
This approval follows successful switches of Cialis® to OTC status in Norway and the United Kingdom. By making the treatment available without a prescription, Opella aims to provide men with a safer and more reliable avenue to manage ED, countering the risks associated with illicit online alternatives.
Erectile dysfunction is a common condition affecting millions of men worldwide and can also serve as an early indicator of underlying cardiovascular issues. The transition to OTC status is intended to reduce stigma and encourage men to seek appropriate care.
Cialis®, which has been available as a prescription medication in Japan for over two decades, will be classified as a 'Pharmacist-Intervention Required Medicine'. This means patients will receive guidance from pharmacy professionals at the point of purchase. The launch in Japan is anticipated to occur within the coming months.
