Open-Source Project Enables Nintendo Switch Games on Apple TV 4K
A developer has introduced TVPort, an open-source tool that allows certain Nintendo Switch games, including Super Mario Odyssey, to run natively on Apple TV 4K hardware.
The TVPort project, detailed on Reddit, utilizes the nxnative toolkit and AI-assisted code compilation to port Nintendo Switch software to Apple's set-top box. The implementation currently allows for 60FPS performance in titles like Super Mario Odyssey, though minor audio and frame pacing inconsistencies remain in specific high-load scenarios.
The technical process involves re-compiling game code and diagnosing texture loading disparities. Developers noted that the software does not bypass copyright protections; it requires users to provide their own game files extracted from physical cartridges using a modified Nintendo Switch console.
Hardware constraints remain a significant factor for the project. While the third-generation Apple TV 4K supports the software, intensive games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom may encounter thermal throttling. Observers expect that the upcoming fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, equipped with the A19 chip, will offer more overhead for these unofficial ports.
