OpenAI accused of aiding and abetting school shooting

AI company OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman are facing new accusations. Thirty new lawsuits were filed in a California federal court on Wednesday, accusing the company and Altman of providing "substantial assistance and encouragement" to the suspect in the Tumbler Ridge school shooting in Canada.

These new lawsuits are similar to those filed in April by the families of victims from Tumbler Ridge. The current legal actions claim OpenAI failed to take action after its automated review system had flagged conversations between the alleged shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, and ChatGPT regarding gun purchases.

The lawsuits, filed by students, teachers, and the principal at the time of the incident, seek damages for alleged negligence and for the company's failure to act despite its systems potentially identifying a risk.

This case highlights the ethical and legal questions surrounding the use of AI technology and its potential risks. OpenAI has not yet issued an official statement regarding the latest allegations.
