OpenAI acquires software development toolmaker Pierre

OpenAI has acquired Pierre to integrate its code storage and navigation tools into the Codex development ecosystem.

5 November 2026

OpenAI announced on November 4 that it has acquired Pierre, a firm specializing in distributed code storage systems and developer productivity tools. The acquisition brings specialized technology into the OpenAI fold, specifically tools designed for navigating complex codebases and auditing software changes.

According to the announcement, Pierre's existing open-source initiatives will remain accessible to the developer community, and the company will continue its contributions to these projects. Current customers of Pierre's Code Storage system will retain access to the service as OpenAI begins the process of migrating and integrating these features into its Codex model.

The strategic move is aimed at enhancing OpenAI’s capabilities in the software development lifecycle. By combining internal developer tools with its existing artificial intelligence models, the company intends to streamline workflows ranging from initial code branching to final deployment.
