OpenAI Adds Voice Mode to ChatGPT Desktop App
OpenAI has updated its ChatGPT desktop application to include voice functionality. Users can now interact with AI agents and perform tasks on their computers using voice commands.
OpenAI announced on Thursday that it has updated its ChatGPT desktop application to add support for ChatGPT Voice, enabling users to talk to the app to control AI agents and perform tasks on their computers.
The new feature utilizes OpenAI's ChatGPT-Live family of voice models, launched earlier this month. These models are designed for more natural conversations with improved interruption handling.
ChatGPT Voice integrates with both ChatGPT Work and Codex. It can also access computer skills to browse websites and interact with applications. On macOS, via Appshots, it can access on-screen content, including alt-text, allowing for more comprehensive control.
This desktop iteration is more capable than the initial smartphone voice feature, which focused on conversation rather than action. The desktop version allows users to dictate multi-step commands and respond to ChatGPT's requests for input. A demonstration showed a user commanding ChatGPT to create a new thread, make a pull request, and find a bug's root cause with a single voice instruction.
The functionality is now rolling out globally to the ChatGPT desktop app.
