OpenAI and Nvidia in talks for up to $250 billion AI infrastructure backstop
OpenAI is in discussions with Nvidia for a potential backstop of up to $250 billion. This would help fund the company's plans for a new AI data center in Ohio.

OpenAI is reportedly in talks with Nvidia for a significant financial backstop, potentially reaching up to $250 billion. This agreement would aim to secure debt financing for OpenAI's ambitious plans to lease and develop a large-scale AI data center in Pike County, Ohio.
The proposed backstop would leverage Nvidia's credit strength to enable OpenAI to raise funds for the 10-gigawatt data center campus. Discussions regarding the facility's financing and lease terms are ongoing and subject to change, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The move comes as OpenAI seeks to scale its computing infrastructure to meet growing demand for its AI models, facing intense competition from tech giants like Google and Amazon, who are also investing heavily in their own AI capabilities.
This follows a previous report in October 2025 where Nvidia was expected to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI, an investment that did not materialize. However, Nvidia did contribute $30 billion to OpenAI's latest funding round, which closed in March 2026. OpenAI is currently valued at nearly $1 trillion.
