OpenAI appoints former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll as national security advisor
OpenAI has hired former U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to lead its efforts in national security modernization. The role focuses on advising the company on AI applications for defense and cybersecurity.

OpenAI has appointed Dan Driscoll, the former U.S. Army Secretary, as its new senior counselor for national security modernization. The appointment marks a strategic shift for the artificial intelligence firm as it seeks to deepen its engagement with defense and national security sectors.
Driscoll, who resigned his position as Army Secretary earlier this year following reports of friction with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, will advise OpenAI leadership on implementing AI to improve cybersecurity and operational efficiency. His background includes overseeing military modernization and diplomatic efforts, notably his involvement in high-level discussions regarding peace plans in Ukraine.
CEO Sam Altman stated that the appointment is intended to strengthen U.S. leadership in AI. Driscoll will facilitate collaboration between OpenAI and various government agencies, focusing on the responsible adoption of AI by U.S. allies. The move complements existing initiatives, such as the company's Daybreak program, aimed at protecting essential infrastructure.
