OpenAI, the artificial intelligence research company, announced it has disrupted a fraud network operating from Cambodia that was using its ChatGPT technology for illicit purposes. The group allegedly engaged in investment scams, romance fraud, and gambling-related deceptions.

The operation, which came to light through a tip from WhatsApp earlier this year, utilized ChatGPT to create fake identities, translate scam messages, and generate promotional content for their fraudulent activities. OpenAI also noted the network produced content related to human trafficking and forced criminal activity. A coordinated set of ChatGPT accounts, suspected to be from Cambodia and active in the Poipet region, has been disabled.

Scammers within the network established trust with victims using fabricated personas before luring them into fake investment schemes, often involving cryptocurrency or gold. While the specific narratives varied, OpenAI observed consistent patterns of fraudulent behavior across the compromised accounts.

OpenAI has suspended the associated ChatGPT accounts and shared intelligence with industry partners. The full extent of financial losses caused by the network is not yet public, though reports indicate some victims lost thousands of dollars.
