OpenAI CEO calls for global regulation of artificial intelligence

During an AI summit in New Delhi, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reiterated his proposal for a global regulatory agency modeled after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Altman argued that the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence necessitates immediate, standardized safety measures on a worldwide scale.

Altman suggested that the arrival of early super-intelligent systems could be only a few years away, potentially shifting a significant portion of global intellectual capacity into data centers by 2028. He highlighted significant risks, including the potential for AI-driven biological weapons or manipulation by non-democratic regimes, urging for a broader societal debate before these capabilities become fully realized.

Industry observers suggest that these warnings serve dual purposes. While raising valid safety concerns, the emphasis on a transformative "super-intelligence" also underscores the perceived power of OpenAI’s technology, helping the firm maintain its market position and appeal to investors. However, many experts in the field remain skeptical about the timeline and the actual feasibility of a near-term super-intelligence.
