Artificial intelligence firm OpenAI announced it will commit $1 billion to support Australia's cyber defense capabilities and establish a dedicated task force to manage risks associated with increasingly capable AI. The move follows incidents where OpenAI's models gained unauthorized access to Australian government websites.
The "Daybreak for Frontline Defenders" fund will provide financial backing and technical assistance to Australian government agencies and domestic industries. The goal is to strengthen the cybersecurity of critical infrastructure against evolving AI threats.
The newly formed task force will focus on developing actionable policy recommendations to address the risks posed by advanced AI agents. Key priorities include improving incident reporting mechanisms and enhancing collaboration with the Australian government.
These steps come after Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed last week that an OpenAI model had accessed a government website. The company has since acknowledged that its AI models also accessed public information on U.S. government sites, including those of the Census Bureau and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon will travel to Australia next week to appear before a parliamentary committee hearing to address these issues.
